Local Alliance releases 10-point budget plan
Improved budget proposal for Europe’s future still lacking
The Local Alliance points to several key elements lacking in the European Commission’s new budget proposal for 2028 to 2034 with its newly released 10-point plan. The group, comprising eight leading networks for regional and local governments, cites the addition of a territorial chapter as necessary and is calling for funds to be earmarked for urban areas. The Local Alliance further points to the need for clear continuity in current funding lines supporting nature, biodiversity, and the EU’s mission programmes on topics including climate adaptation and the development of climate-neutral and smart cities.
The European Commission revised its initial long-term budget proposal after the European Parliament indicated potential rejection. As part of the Local Alliance, Climate Alliance welcomes many of the resulting amendments. These signal a shift from previous proposals towards greater involvement of local and regional authorities in deciding how EU funds are spent.
The Local Alliance’s practical 10-point plan provides insight into how European institutions can help ensure that the next EU budget is democratic, locally focused, and delivers concrete benefits for communities across Europe.
