The Working Group on CO2 Monitoring exchanges information on the development and implementation of municipal greenhouse gas emissions tracking. The current focus is on the topic of a pricing model for CO2 in public procurement. Want to get involved and find out more?
Climate neutral cities
Paving the way for a fossil-free future
We support cities as key players on the path to climate neutrality.
Climate neutrality by 2050 – this is the EU’s declared goal. But this cannot be achieved without the involvement of cities and urban areas, which account for more than 70% of global CO2 emissions. Cities are thus key players on the road to decarbonisation – a role underlined by the EU’s mission for climate-neutral and smart cities. Urban areas across Europe must act to reduce emissions and air pollution, to optimise local transport and to offer sustainable living spaces for citizens.
Not all climate neutrality is equal
Climate neutral is good, fossil-free is better. Even though the term ‘climate neutrality’ has long been established, we need to take a closer look. Is it about reducing actual CO2 emissions, or are we simply using clever accounting to attempt to compensate for emissions generated elsewhere? Climate Alliance has always stood for the principle of saving energy, using energy efficiently and expanding renewable energies. In other words: avoiding offsetting in practice and reducing CO2 emissions locally.
Climate Alliance puts this philosophy into practice, offering municipalities concrete services and tools to support them in this endeavour – whether it be via working groups on the subject of energy and emissions inventories, through accounting tools for monitoring and analysing local emissions or in EU projects through the development of innovative approaches.
