Energy poverty
Promoting socially just climate action
Together, we are finding ways out of energy poverty.
The climate crisis is just as much a social challenge as it is an environmental one and it is these social aspects must be given greater consideration in the solutions we propose. Energy poverty is one such challenge, which is only exacerbated by war and inflation. Yet solutions to combat energy poverty at the local level do exist. This has been proven by regions, cities and towns across Europe.
Leave no one behind – fightinh energy poverty together
A household can be considered energy poor when it lacks access to the energy services needed to provide for an adequate standard of living. Rising energy costs and inefficient buildings throughout Europe only exacerbate the problem. Protecting vulnerable households must therefore be at the top of the agenda in order to ensure that our climate action is fair. Yet energy poverty takes on various shapes depending on where one looks, often with substantial variance between areas. This is why individual and local solutions are needed – regions, cities and towns have a key role to play.
Local and regional authorities can help ensure sustainable energy production, for example by promoting energy communities. They can influence energy prices through municipal facilities or promote the energy-efficient renovation of buildings. As coordinator of the EU Energy Poverty Advisory Hub (EPAH), Climate Alliance has been playing a key role in shaping EU-wide ambitions to combat energy poverty since 2021. But our network also provides guidance for the local and regional level through a variety of other activites. Explore what we have to offer!
